“Search engine optimization.” The words may sound a little foreign if you haven’t used SEO for your business before — but no worries! We are going to break down the basics of what SEO is, and how you can use SEO to drive potential consumers to view what you have to offer!
WHAT EVEN IS SEO?
Search engine optimization is the art of using search engines (Google, Bing, etc.) to drive specific and targeted traffic to your site. It’s a way to bring exposure to your organization/brand by using organic (aka non-paid) methods through the search engine results!
OKAY, COOL. WHY IS SEO IMPORTANT?
Statistics don’t lie — and there are plenty of studies that show the importance of SEO! For example, one study that tracked where traffic on the web begins showed 70.6% starting from a search engine, versus 29.4% coming from elsewhere! The opportunity to gain traffic using search engines is significantly higher than paid-per-clicks on the web. Other types of advertising cause you to continuously shell out money to keep the ads going, whereas SEO is highly cost-effective for you!
HOW DO SEARCH ENGINES DECIDE WHAT CONTENT BEST MATCHES WHAT ONE IS SEARCHING FOR?
Search engines match up content with what is relevant by looking at keywords — how well the words you use match up with what the user is looking for. If you are searching for “buffalo chicken dip recipes,” the articles with those pertinent keywords are likely to pop up first! Therefore, you will want to research what product (for what you sell) and informational (not specifically what you sell) keywords your audience will use for your organization…but more on that later in the series!
WHAT KIND OF CONTENT CAN I CREATE FOR SEO PURPOSES?
We will go further in-depth on this topic…so be on the look-out for that in an upcoming article! A few examples of potential content, though, are blogs, product pages, guides, interviews…the possibilities are virtually endless with what kind of content you can create, as long as you are including your keywords, and the content is exciting and inviting to the reader! Additionally, a few popular topics that you, as a photographer, could blog about are topics like the top engagement shoot locations in your area, this year’s most popular wedding venues in your area or you could conduct vendor interviews…again, the possibilities are virtually endless!
ULTIMATELY, WHY SHOULD I PUT EFFORT AND ENERGY INTO SEO? HOW WILL SEO HELP MY BUSINESS SUCCEED?
If I had to sum up SEO in one sentence, I would say that “SEO helps your business succeed because, if you provide solid content, with the correct keywords, you can ultimately bring traffic to your website that, eventually, can turn into conversions.” It is an organic advertising tactic that can usher in more sales, which ultimately is what leads a business to success!
